A Brief History of eCommerce

“Social shopping has never been as important as it is today,” says Social Times writer Megan O’Neil. She’s right on the money: according to a recent report by Forrester Research, eCommerce sales are expected to grow to $250 Billion by the year 2014.

Social shopping has evolved dramatically over the years: the earliest generation of eCommerce sites, which hit the web in 1995, were essentially digitized mail-order catalogues. Later, companies such as Amazon merged the art of selling online with the service of social feedback, where users could share their purchases and publish their experiences with products. More recently, with Web 2.0, social media networks like Facebook have spawned their own sub-genre of e-commerce, dubbed “f-com.”
